A HUGE STEP BACKWARDS!

One of our favourite artists is John Fahey, the American primitive guitarist who’s work ranges from gentle finger picking to extreme, experimental soundscapes! We were aproached by Alpha Hey who claimed to be the spiritual heirs of the John Fahey sound and presented us with an albums worth of instumental picking and computer generated noise! It wasn’t quite up to the standard of a Takoma or Revenant release, but it was good enough for Topplers! After editing it down to reasonable length we looked for an unusual way topresent this retro recording and found a company that still make shellac 78rpmdiscs.These beautiful 10″ discs will not be available through the Topplers website (too fragile) and can only be bought from Alpha Hey themselves! A digital download will be online shortly.

Nikki Sudden Tribute

A tribute CD to the late, great Nikki Sudden is being released by Sunthunder Records in Italy. Among the acts covering Nikki’s songs are The NoMen who do a rousing version of “All the Gold” which was on Nikki’s first solo album ‘Waiting on Egypt’ from 1982.

Check the label’s MySpace site to see the excellent artwork by Jef Aerosol.

Updated website

The topplers website is being slowly updated and the shop is the first page where you will see a change.
Unfortunately the price of postage has risen considerably since we set up the site and is due to rise again, so we have divided the shop into three sections with prices for the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. UK customers still pay the same but I’m afraid we have had to add a little extra to customers outwith the UK… sorry!

Recent News

There is new artwork and photos on the Cult Figures site. The site also has original MP3 files from the band’s two singles from 1979 and 1980. You can also hear the Ironfish tapes and see their epic video!

The general consensus about last years free compilation CD was that the stand-out tracks were by Jowe Head, Gang and Dan Melchior.

Jowe Head’s track had already been released by Topplers on the ‘From a Parallel Universe’ CD and we are pleased to say that Dan Melchior’s excellent “Elev to Mezz” has now been released as a 7″ single on DAGGERMAN RECORDS.
Gang’s amazing “Rat Poison” is released as part of their 5 track CD-EP on Hot Dog City Records.

Please buy these records…
they’re G-R-E-A-T-!-!-!

The Nyah Fearties website will be moving back within the Topplers page.
More tracks, photos, links etc etc etc…

A 78rpm disc of experimental acoustic folk-blues will be released by Alpha Hey! This is destined for instant obscurity!
Rumours persist about an even more primitive than usual Knockouts recording…
A Nikki Sudden tribute CD is due out on Sunthunder Records in Italy featuring the NoMen.

TrakMarx

TrakMarx is one of the best (possibly THE best) punk related webzines around! It’s well written, looks good and deals with real bands (both old and new).
The new one is online now with stuff about Grinderman, the Stooges etc. There’s even a review of ARF…

Angel Racing Food – “Arf” (Topplers)
Angel Racing Food – for those of you with your heads stuck up your arses – are the latest incarnation of Jowe Head (Swell Maps) – aided & abetted by Jeffery Bloom (TV Personalities) & Lee McFadden (ATV).
“Arf” collates 11-slabs of ‘eccentric mutant-rock’ for the discerning listener: “Ravenous Scavenger”, “Butcher Shop Lassie”, Clockwork Sparrows”, “Ketchup Money” - even the song-titles have a personality of their own. Standout cuts include the group’s classic debut 45 – “Venus Big Foot” - & the aforementioned “Clockwork Sparrows”.
It may well be nigh on 30-years since “A Trip To Marineville” lit the blue touch paper that launched the post-punk DIY explosion – but that doesn’t mean that “Arf” can’t stand next to it shoulder to shoulder. In many ways, Topplers & their ilk are the Rough Trades of the noughties - & while their inspiration struggles to contemplate life without Sanctuary’s (rapidly evaporating) money – The Topplers of this world carry on regardless. Love not lucre. It’s never been about the money, you see?
